Year 2

Welcome from Year 2.

Welcome to Year 2 in St Gerard's, the teacher in this class is Miss Bluck and our teaching assistant is Miss Creamer.

Each day we study Mathematics and English (speaking and listening, reading, writing and phonics). We also study religion, science, computing, physical education, art, design technology, geography, history, music and singing, Personal, Social, Health, and Citizenship Education.

During the year, the children will also have the opportunity to participate in an outdoor learning program. Children need to have their named PE kit in school every day.

Reading books: Each child will have two books – one selected by us and one chosen by your child. Reading books need to be in school every day and will usually be changed on Tuesday. Please try to read every night with your child and to fill in the reading diary at least twice a week. You can share writing in the reading diary with your child. You may also write about books from home or the library. We value the comments and they help us select books for your child. Homework is given out weekly on a Friday; it is usually Maths, English or topic based. The homework is expected to be completed and returned to school on the following Wednesday.

Spellings are given out on Fridays, please practise at home for spelling tests on the following Friday. Please return the spelling sheets to school on the day of the test. Children will have individual, group and class (topic-based spellings) during the year.

Our Catholic Faith is very important to us and we strive to ensure that we live out our Mission Statement to the best of our ability every day. In our classroom, we have a special prayer focus area that we use to celebrate our faith. Tuesday Mass is held in Church or sometimes in the classroom or school hall. In addition to regular participation at Mass, together with services at Church, we are given the opportunity to conduct and lead our own prayer services for our class. Parents are always welcome to attend school and class Masses. During the year, there will be times that a prayer bag is sent home for you and your family to celebrate with together.

During World Faith week, Year 2 find out about Buddhism. We look at different festivals and find out how Buddhists practise their faith.

All of the children in our school are in houses named after saints. Each year we vote for representatives from these for our School Council.

Each year we have a class assembly. There is usually a mix of singing, drama, poetry and prayer and all children are involved. Parents are invited to attend and enjoy it with us.
