As part of our History topic, Year 4 visited Conkers for a Viking discovery day.
We commenced the day at the Bushcraft area, where we met Ranger Jack. After discussing the daily life of a Viking, we used natural materials found in the woods to build our own long houses. Working in teams, we carried logs to build a secure structure and attempted to make it waterproof. Once we had climbed inside, Ranger Jack threw water over the roof; a few of us got a little wet!
Next, we walked to the base camp, to work in our ‘clans’ to design Viking shields with intricate patterns. Once they were completed, use used the shields to protect ourselves from an enemy attack.
After lunch, we visited the 4D cinema to watch a film about a young boy called Noah, who goes on an amazing journey to discover exotic wildlife, which reminded us how we should care for the nature around us.
We finished the day, with a Viking orienteering activity. In small groups, we explored the 120 acres of woodland within Conkers, looking for Viking clues.
