Year 5 visited Greenwood Academy to take part in a taster Science lesson. They started off thinking about ‘What is science?’ and ‘Why is it useful?’ they discovered that in Science we study EVERYTHING and try to understand the world around us.

Our Science teacher told us that today we would be investigating fireworks and we briefly learnt about the history of Gunpowder and how it originated in China.

The teacher asked us ‘Where do the colours in fireworks come from?’ and we discovered it was from burning metals. So, we experimented burning different metals to see which colours they make. We used Bunsen burners and splints with five different metals on and held them in the flame. Our favourite metal we burnt was Lithium which made a deep red colour.

To finish our exciting lesson, our teacher explained how a firework is so bright and showed us how magnesium burns. We had to watch it through very tinted glass. We were captivated!
